The investigative approach:

The claim investigator will seek to “reconstruct” the loss. In order to do so they will typically follow a systematic approach along these lines:

1. Incident Overview

The investigator will begin simply by compiling a short summary of the event that includes the claimant data, type, date, time, location, and brief description of the claim.

2. Claimant Interview/Statement

The claimant or insured person as well as the driver of the insured vehicle will be asked to make a statement, either verbally or in writing. This statement might even be recorded and entered into the investigation report.

3. Documentary Evidence

In many cases, a claim investigator will ask to see documentary evidence related to the claim. For example, the police report, receipts, invoices, and estimates for the repair of the vehicle. (If not provided from the insurance) Our investigator’s job is to scrutinize the evidence to either justify the claim or identify potential alterations or falsifications that could indicate a problem. This will all be relayed to the insurance company via an Investigation Report.

4. Documentary Evidence

Our Investigator will go to the accident scene and take photos and do an inspect in loco, if possible with the driver of the vehicle.

5. Witness Statements

Statements from people who may have witnessed details or incidents related to the claim will be called upon to give their statements. This is considered a critical element of the investigation as witness reports are “fact-checked” against the statements and evidence collected above. Discrepancies here can lead to additional investigative probing and the need for substantiation. Interviews with witnesses to the accident, passengers in the vehicles involved are used to help determine fault.

6. Case Report

As the final step in a claim investigation, the report highlights the most compelling facts of the case. The investigator does not typically offer an opinion in these reports; only the facts and findings. The report is therefore vital in cases of disputed facts and questionable evidence as it will help the insurance company make a final determination as to their next move in handling your case.

In a claim investigation, preparation and cooperation will go a long way. They critically analyse all evidence relating to a claim; and they report on factually supported conclusions without justification of a preconceived result.

In our validation of the circumstances of the vehicle accident we ascertain the following:

1. Date, time and location of accident
2. Damage in line with accident description and scene
3. Physical and mechanical condition of vehicle prior to accident
4. Condition of driver at time of the accident

To assist us in determining the validation of the client’s claim we will do the following:

1. We interview the insured and/or the driver at the time of the accident and obtain a description of the events
2. A copy of the identity document and driver’s license is obtained from the insured and/or driver. The drivers licence is also verified on the
     relevant systems.
3. We obtain a copy of the SAPS accident report and confirm the description of events on the report (if the AR is not issued to us by the
     insurance company)
4. We determine whether the SAPS are investigating a criminal case and interviews are conducted with police personnel who visited the
     scene.
5. We visit the scene and search for possible evidence such as skid marks, close circuit cameras in order to view footage, etc. Scene and any
     evidence found are photographed.
6. Any witnesses as well as breakdown personnel, ambulance personnel and third parties involved are interviewed and their version of the
    events obtained

     or medication inside the vehicle.
9. If any reasons are found relating to issues such as drunk driving, questions as to the identity of the driver at the time of the accident etc, we
obtain all relevant evidence required in order to repudiate such claim.
